A little girl who was never accepted
Who always had people put her down
Who was always told that she was somehow wrong
And she believed them
They degraded her looks and her intelligence
She knew about something she hid: her asthma, so didn't try to defend herself
A small girl who wanted to prove to herself that she was more than everyone said that she was
Who never before ran more than a fifty on the pacer test
Who was determined to break that number
And eventually she did
They watched her as she ran a fifty-five and then a sixty-five
She stumbled to the sidelines gasping for air, but she knew that she was more than nothing
A young girl who was just discovering how to actually write
Who was finally able to express herself
Who finally voiced the things that she had never said
And she was free
They could call her anything that they wanted
She didn't hear them
A timid girl who had just crossed the threshold of high school
Who was looking for somewhere to fit in
Who wanted to somehow make a difference
And she stepped out into the spotlight to do just that
They saw her standing erect and proud as she performed with her band
She heard them still making fun, but absolutely none of it mattered now
An average girl who searches to find out who she is
Who knows what she has inside herself
Who couldn't find out how to get around her shyness until a friend heard her sing
They told her what she needed to hear, which let her hold up her head and become an actual soprano
She just smirked when she heard them talking and it wasn't long before they stopped talking at all
A strong girl who is at the split of two more roads
Who now has a friend or two on her side
Who is again determined, but now it's about facing her future and sees that she doesn't have to be alone
They have been replaced by those who say they love her, and believe it or not...
She actually believes them
The center of gravity is certainly one of struggle...and hope and perserverance and inner strength. I'm glad you posted this. Thanks.
