SPOILER ALERT
Normally I would start out a reading response with a description of the book that I had read but I find that this series should be the exception. Most people know about the teenage girl hype over the series and the whole “Team Edward vs. Team Jacob” thing. I won’t waste time denying the fact that the Twilight series is what it is. It is a love story. What I will say though, is that Twilight itself has been lost due to the fan base for the actors in the movies. Most people are only watching the movies to see more of Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. So today, I’m going to write about the triangle between Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black. About the difficulties that Bella had in her decision of who she was going to spend the rest of her life with.
My first point is the many reasons why Bella had a hard time choosing between Edward and Jacob: Once finding out what either boy was, Bella decided that she didn’t care (pg 195 Twilight and pg 307 New Moon). Both boys tried to stay away from Bella when they realized that they were or could be a danger to her. Edward left in New Moon and Jacob left in Eclipse; they both eventually came back. Bella loved them both, though in separate ways, and throughout the series, feels their pain like her own (pg 475 New Moon and pg 5 Eclipse). Both boys loved Bella and saw no other girl with any romantic interest (pg 168 Twilight and pg 335 Breaking Dawn) and showered her with their love. In their love, they both let Bella love the other boy because they knew that she would be unhappy if she was made to choose between them (example pg 409 New Moon). Both also love having Bella know that they are a vampire and a werewolf (pg 344 Twilight and 308 New Moon).
My second point is the reasons that Bella had to choose or not to choose Jacob: Bella did love Jacob, though not as much as she loved Edward (pg 528 Eclipse). She loved him but she was not in love with him. Jacob also wished her dead when he found out that she was planning on turning into a vampire (pg 183 Eclipse) and never did imprint on her. Though, Jacob knew almost every thought that Bella had throughout the entire series. He also told her everything he thought she would need to know because he knew that she was strong enough to handle whatever the news may have been. He stayed with her even when she was pregnant with Edward’s baby and when she drank blood to keep the baby alive (pg 249 Breaking Dawn) and even left his wolf pack to guard her (pg 209 Breaking Dawn).
My third point is the reasons that Bella had to either choose or not choose Edward: First off, Bella is in love with Edward (pg 195 Twilight). There is also an undeniable connection between the two of them (pg 267 Twilight) and there’s the fact that Bella was made for Edward (pg 267 Twilight). She is his “La tua cantante” which means that her blood “sings” for him and it is harder for him to resist killing her than if she were someone else (pg 471 New Moon). Bella also subconsciously orients herself around Edward (pg 68 Eclipse) and is willing to give up her mother and father, Renee and Charlie, in her choosing to be with him. Bella tried to survive without him only to realize that he was essential to her life and her health (pg 124 New Moon). Edward’s family is also perfect for Bella because she always gets injured and Carlisle, Edward’s father, is a doctor. Edward even is willing to let Bella have a baby with Jacob instead of himself if it would save her life (pg 181 Breaking Dawn). On the other hand, Edward has to constantly make himself not kill Bella for her blood. She also has the Volturi, the head vampires, coming after her because Edward doesn’t want to make her a vampire and they don’t like that she knows about vampires when she isn’t one herself. Bella would also have to give up everyone she knows in order to stay with Edward as a vampire.
As my conclusion, I’ll point out that, in the end just like in the beginning, Bella did choose Edward. She married him (pg 49 Breaking Dawn) and did have a baby, named Renesmee, with him (pg 352 Breaking Dawn). If she hadn’t chosen Edward, Renesmee wouldn’t have been born and Jacob wouldn’t have imprinted on her (pg 360 Breaking Dawn). He wouldn’t have found the person that he was really supposed to end up with and Edward would have lived until Bella died, getting himself killed afterwards because he found life pointless without her. The Cullen family wouldn’t have gained another member to their family and the Volturi, finally coming after Bella, would have killed her and possibly the entire Cullen family. Bella choosing Edward put everything that was supposed to happen in place. Everyone ended up where they were supposed to be and everyone was happy. Charlie also got to see his granddaughter and not his dead daughter.
very interesting and i feel complicated reason for why bella couldn't pick between edward and jacob. i personally have never read the books and don't plan to but i like your view on the confusing topic.
ReplyDeleteI also along with Katie have not read the books. But, I have watched all of the movies and a lot of people tell me they are nothing like the books and they leave out a lot of parts. I personally don't like when movies leave parts out that are in books because it takes away some of the meaning that the book has created.
ReplyDeleteWell thank you, ma'am
ReplyDeleteI agree with you one hundred percent, Jessica.
ReplyDeleteNice argument on the b0ooks. I didn't get in to that main argument while reading the series, but I was dissapointed at the very black and white ending of Breaking Dawn (good guys win, all bad guys died, etc.)
ReplyDeleteI liked the books, I didn't want to read them at first because in middle school I was not a reader but my sister and some friend convinced me and I ended up liking them. I never actually finished the fourth book, I believe I still have around five chapters left but oh well. The movies ruined the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteI have never read the Twilight series, mostly because of all the hype about the movies. I found the "Edward vs. Jacob" thing irritating, and I didn't want to have anything to do with it. Now that I've read your post, though, it does sound like an interesting story. I'm having second thoughts about reading these books!
ReplyDeleteI agree about the movies. The hype and the way that the characters are portrayed is very misleading. But about the ending of Breaking Dawn, not all the bad guys were killed. The Volturi are still alive and they can always come back. The things is, Bella and Edward will live forever so Stephanie had to find some sort of stopping point. Otherwise, the story could always continue.
ReplyDeleteI've read the Twilight series in middle school because the movie was coming out and many of my friends convinced me to. It's a really good series. I love your summary and I enjoy your post.
